Update on “Saving GB3LD”
15 August 2025
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note to let you know I’ve taken down the payment and donation links for now while I get a few legal bits checked over. Everything else on the page is still there for you to read, and I’ll pop the links back up as soon as I get the all-clear. PLEASE Fill in the Form and let me know what you can offer.
Who’s Behind This?
We are Lee (M5LEE) and Stuart (2M0MNB). We’ve been kindly offered the opportunity by the family of the late Bob G3VVT to take over and rescue the GB3LD repeater site. Bob was a highly respected figure in the amateur radio world, and it’s an honour to continue his legacy by keeping GB3LD alive and on the air.
About the CumbriaCQ Network and Our Commitment
Lee (M5LEE) is the founder of CumbriaCQ.com, and has personally invested thousands of pounds into creating and sustaining a robust, independent amateur radio network across the region.
His ongoing contributions include:
- Personally funding and operating the repeaters:
GB3MX, GB3CU, GB3WU
GB7PG (now owned and operated by Stuart 2M0MNB) - Running APRS gateways:
MB7UCU, MB7UCV, and several LoRa-based APRS iGates - Hosting and maintaining a Meshtastic network
- Operating an MQTT server
- Providing all backend infrastructure and linking services for CumbriaCQ
All of this has been supported out of pocket, driven by a passion for amateur radio — not sponsorships or grants.
What We Aim to Do with GB3LD
Our goal is to rescue and restore GB3LD, bringing it back as a vital resource for the local radio community. This includes:
- Replacing the mast antennas (including a new 2m/70cm omni-directional antenna)
- Repairing the mast and coaxial cabling
- Replacing damaged fencing to secure the site
- Reconnecting power and network services
- Legally and operationally securing the site (including insurance cover)
As part of our research into ongoing costs, business rates will apply to the site.
However, we expect to qualify for 100% small business rates relief, so there should be no charge for this — but it’s still an important step in making GB3LD officially recognised and futureproof.
Ongoing Running Costs
We estimate the annual running costs to be approximately £500, covering:
- Electricity – currently ~£88 per quarter
- Internet access – cost depending on the chosen solution
- Site insurance – currently being priced
- Business rates – we expect full relief (100% discount), but will keep this under review
We’re committed to researching and optimising costs wherever possible to ensure GB3LD runs reliably and efficiently.
In Addition GB3LF in Kendal
We also plan to look after GB3LF in Kendal. This site needs a little work on the antennas / cable. We plan on sorting that out.

We’re asking for your support to help cover both initial restoration and ongoing running costs.

Let’s Keep GB3LD On the Air
Let’s work together to bring GB3LD back to life and secure its future as a trusted and valuable local resource for many years to come.
Thank you for your support.
